When did your company start?
The concept for the TALKBox started with hurricane Wilma in South Florida when the power and all communications was down for 6 million people for about a week. We started working on the TALKBox concept about a year later in 2007 and first deployed a unit in 2008. The latest version of the product is launching in summer of 2012.
Where are you located?
Our development and manufacturing is located in the Miami/Ft Lauderdale area with administrative offices in Michigan and Sales in Arkansas.
Who is your target market?
Our core market is emergency responders at city, county, state and national levels, remote location services such as oil rigs, mines, agribusinesses, movies and events as well as private business who are looking for a portable comms solution.
Do you have a mission or vision statement? What is it?
Mission statement – to provide a comprehensive communications interoperability solution that takes the reality of the circumstances into consideration to ensure that it will of significant benefit and value to users of the system.
Vision – continuous improvement on the narrow focus of our business model to deliver what is needed to emergency responders to be more effective in aiding the community
Did you experience any failures & how did you overcome them?
Our biggest obstacle to success on this product was to come up with a solution that would allow the radio sourced traffic and the phone traffic to communicate without clipping off the beginning of the conversation. It was critical to make sure that any user of the system only feel that the communications they experienced was as good as they would normally expect. Ultimate it was resolved and we were able to keep to our internal criteria of acceptable quality of communications.
Is there anything I haven't covered that you would like to address?
Our core development philosophy is to make as durable a product as possible and to this end we do not try to re-invent the wheel. We use subcomponents that are tried and proven durable as long as they meet our technical needs. We are expanding the scope of the TALBox to incorporate more data services and more features such as the optional cameras, video conferencing and a high performance server so that more software applications specific to our customer can be packaged into the box that they use in the provision of services. This way we can build almost a duplicate to the systems and the data that emergency responders use every day. One of our key goals is to make the technology as invisible as possible so that when someone is in the midst of the chaos of an emergency, they don’t need to spend any extra minutes trying to figure out how to use something. The more second nature it is the more time they save and in an emergency it may be enough to make a difference.
