Slow Down, Move Over - Don't Be an Idiot!

Sadly, more than 1000 emergency responders and law enforcements officers have been injured and nearly 200 have been killed since 1997. All of these deaths are easily preventable if drivers would simply slow down and move over. While the Missouri Move Over Law was implemented in 2006, a poll shows that only 29 percent of drivers are even aware of the law.
Fines for violators of the Mover Over Law can run from $50 to upwards of $500 with some states requiring jail time and additional court costs. These penalties and others are in place to protect the lives of emergency responders and law enforcement officers who save lives every day.

According to a national poll by Mason Dixon Polling & Research, sponsored by the National Safety Commission:
  • 71 percent of Americans have not heard of “Move Over” laws;
  •  86 percent support enacting “Move Over” laws in all 50 states; and
  • 90 percent believe traffic stops and roadside emergencies are dangerous for law enforcement and first responders.
The poll was conducted among 625 registered voters from June 23-25. The margin of error is plus or minus 4 percent.

Forty three states have passed “Move Over” laws, which require motorists to “Move Over” and change lanes to give safe clearance to law enforcement officers on roadsides.

No question about it there has to be more law enforcement on the challenges against aggresive driving by those who believe that the highways were built for them. I cannot tell you on how many times I was given the finger and twice in my life I was shot at, once in Atlanta and then in Augusta Georgia. At both times I was unfamilliar with the routing and I had to change lanes and I was not in any emergency call. If it is that bad for a local emergency vehicle, how bad could it be for a stranger?

I have a white light on top, a large sign that says "Frequent Stops", and flashers on my truck when I am in the field to caution drivers that a slow moving or stopped vehicle is ahead. The reaction I get varies in many ways from the horn to the finger. I have had people stop and cuss me spray me with water guns and throw things. All of this and I am trying to do my job. I saw this photo and just wish I could pull a Riddler move from Batman and beam it into peoples mind. The road is full of "IDIOTS" this day and time. Don't add to them. Move over. We hold a lot of peoples lives in our hands every day that we get behind the wheel. We may need them one day!!!
Just a thought.

Yep, I agree. Here in Britten, some Drivers do not even pull over when they here or see Emergency vehicles. When I was a Fire Fighter in London we even had drivers obtructing Fire Stations when we were trying to get out on shouts.
We have been trying to get simular laws passed over here for a few years now.
Has the U.S. turned into a selfish society like here?

In Missouri, this is outrageous. I tend to blame the lack of driver education, however, how stupid do you have to be to see or hear an emergency vehicle and NOT move over. I see so many drivers who just look stunned. They don't move over...they just act like they have no idea what they should do. I want even stronger fines and penalties. If you don't know how to drive properly and get out of the way, then maybe you should just lose your license.

With all of that being said, I do have one tiny peeve about law enforcement. It is my contention that the second a law enforcement vehicle breaks any basic traffic laws, they should have their lights and siren on. I see it way to often that a Highway Patrol car of Sheriff is doing 20 mph over the speed limit and changing lanes rapidly with no lights or sirens. Of course they know what they are doing and should be good drivers, but remember, there are total idiots out there. I just don't see a reason for a patrol car to be at excessive speed without their lights on. But I am willing to listen if someone knows why they do it.
